Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What type of salt to use?
It is best to use non-iodized salt / rock salt / sea salt. Do not use the regular table salt as this may contain iodine and other additives which can cause irritation.

Why should I use salt water?

Salt water does not get absorbed into the capillaries (no pain).

How much water and salt do I have to use?
Mix 250 ml (equivalent to 1 cup) of lukewarm water with 1/2 teaspoon of salt . It is important to make sure the salt is totally dissolved before using the water. Pour half of the salt water into the neti pot for the right nostril and the remaining half of the water for the other nostril.

What if my nasal passage is blocked?
If water seems to be blocking, you may need to switch back and forth several times.

What if I feel pain or discomfort?
This could be an indication that there is either too little or too much salt in the water.

What if the salt water gets into my mouth or throat?
You need to adjust your head a little.

How do I dry my nostrils?
Close one of your nostrils with your thumb and blow gently through the open nostrils several times. Then do the same process with the other nostril. Do not blow your nose too hard as this may cause water to be forced into areas that do not dry easily.

When should I do nasal cleansing?
It should be ideally practiced in the morning and evening on an empty stomach.

Can I share my neti pot?

For hygiene purpose, please do not share your neti pot.

Who should do nasal cleansing?
Anyone can practice nasal cleansing. Children (above age 8) who perform nasal cleansing should be aided by an adult.
